What is Glamping? Not what you think.

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Article as published in the June 2012 edition of the ARVC Voice
Glamping gives your guests the easy way out and adds value to your campground.

Glamping, sometimes referred to as luxury camping, is [glamorous + camping]; camping where guests are spoiled by comforts usually associated with more luxurious vacations.  Adding allure and attraction to a purely natural outdoor camping experience makes plenty of sense.  After all, attracting folks to the great outdoors is what every public or private campground and park out there tries to do; glamping just ups the ante.
Glamping is everything your guests have always wanted camping to be:  authentic, effortless and inspiring.

Authentic:  yesteryear real deal camping equipment.  Popular glamping accommodations are canvas wall tents, yurts, bell tents, miner’s tents and tipis.  They’re classic, pure and frill free.  Beyond the zippered and canvas varietals, glamping accommodations have evolved to include classic camping trailers.

Not authentic:  park models and ridiculously big rigs.  These aren’t traditional no-frill camping structures.

Effortless:  accommodations all setup and attended just like a five-star hotel room should be with service to match.  A proper loo, real bed, good food, daily housekeeping, upgraded furnishings, complete linens and lickity-split service are all effortless too.  Enjoying the great outdoors can be plenty of work and there’s no question that Mother Nature is an unforgiving hostess.  Glamping lets your guests get wild in style.

Not effortless:  asking your guests to tow or otherwise setup their own accommodation.  That’s just plain work and disqualifies plenty of would-be guests from venturing beyond city limits to stay with you.

Inspiring:  experiences that let the great outdoors shine.  Glamping complements without competing with the natural world.  There’s no question that guests are greening up their acts and looking for something to write home about like a guided hike, bike ride, rafting trip, outdoor dining experience or fireside lesson.

Not inspiring:  yesterday’s arcade, satellite dishes, swimming pools and vending machines.

To glamp or not to glamp
If your guests agree that you already offer two of the three critical glamping success factors above, you might want to go glamping.  Experiment by allocating a small amount of your inventory to a glamping village and start amping up your service.  Additional acreage and new site permits also provide a great excuse to give glamping a go.

If it ain’t broke, don’t break it.  If your core business is the big bus crowd or you’d classify your campground as an overnight RV stop, glamping probably isn’t for you or your valued guests.  Additionally, if you rely on a long-term crowd or already serve up a fleet of park models, glamping might be a disruptive innovation rather than a productive one.  Knowing your guests and your market will help guide your decision.

What’s in it for you?
Guests.  More guests.  Glamping helps you cast a bigger net and attract a brand new customer base without ignoring your loyal long-timer DIYers.  A bigger audience could be that spark plug you’ve been looking for to give you that elusive leg up on the competition.  More satisfied guests happy to pay for a differentiated experience will also do wonders for your bottom and top lines.

While you might be new to glamping, it’s nothing new.  Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt can attest to the allure of properly outfitted luxury camping experience.  The U.K. is spilling over with fun glamping options and exotic locales all over the globe have embraced this sort of a pure eco-sensitive vacation for decades.  It’s high time celebrated U.S. locales start serving up the outdoors in style.

Glamping Guide Service Blazes New Trail

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

With summer on the horizon, plenty of us are itching to get outside and a taste of those great outdoors we’ve heard of.   The sort of outdoors with glassy lakes, sunny skies, furry friends, star drenched sleep and scrumptious fireside eats.  Unfortunately, that charming scene usually morphs into another kind of itch.

Ordinary camping is hard work and the wilderness leaves plenty to be desired as a host.  A simple night’s stay with Mother Nature means engineering your accommodation, concocting your meals caveman style and addressing any personal needs with rogue facilities.  That’s too high a tariff for today’s traveler.

We’re leading the way as a guide in the wonderful world of glamorous camping, or, glamping.  Glamping is everything vacationers have always wanted camping to be:  immersed in the great outdoors, sleeping in a real bed, delighting in a proper loo and indulging in tasty fare.

What was initially identified as a trend has quickly developed into an explosive segment of the hospitality industry.  North America is home to nearly forty dedicated glamping venues.  While this number is but a drop in the lake of the thousands of traditional commercial campgrounds in the United States, several of those existing campgrounds are embracing elements of glamping by enhancing their service levels and accommodation offerings.

In addition to commercial campgrounds enhancing service levels and enriching accommodations, new glamping venues are popping up all over the place as entrepreneurs identify the unique opportunities glamping provides as a business model.

We reimagine, redefine and reinvent camping:  glamping.   Glamping venues provide guests an effortless and enchanting outdoor experience where nature meets nurture™.  We work with existing venues to enhance their business as well as those starting from scratch; guiding the evolution of dirt to destination™.

Get Glamping at Yellowstone

Friday, March 9th, 2012

A mild winter in much of the US has us dreaming of amazing meals, memories and s’mores ‘round the campfire.  No starry summer sky matches the one at Yellowstone National Park.  We’ve been there a few times and barely dipped our toe in the 3,468 square mile playground.

While the Yellowstone playground is tops, finding a spot to rest is sort of like hearing the “you better get back to class bell” right in the middle of an epic playground dare.  Your after-recess course could be Algebra – a predictable hotel, or, maybe Economics – a traditional have it out with nature camping skirmish. Not much fun either way you slice it.

If you’ve got the right guidance counselor, you’d have another sort of a recess right after the regular one.  We’ll call it Study Hall. That’s what Glamping is; the answers to the test all neat and tidy.

Copy everything you like about hotels and everything you like about camping and paste it smack in the essay section of your summer vacation exam.  That’s precisely what the industrious folks over at Yellowstone Under Canvas have done – for you.

Jiffies from the West entrance of Yellowstone, it’s like you’re in the park.  Get your fly fish on in the Madison River; dine, grill, picnic, paddle, fish, float, ride horseback, or take a game drive and a sun downer.  All this recess while knowing you’ve got the luxury of a tipi or safari tent waiting for you at day’s end.  No worries; the loos are close at hand.

Anxious to stay in the park?  Take a tipi with you and have a field trip.  Remember: no forging the permission slip signature.

Glamping venues attract the imaginative sort and that’s exactly who we get along with best.  If you’ve got the hankering to launch your own unbelievable adventure, give us a ring.  We’re that kid who gets straight A’s and will let you cheat off his paper.

Glamping: the easy way out

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Boots? Check.

Clothes?  Check.

Toothbrush?  Check.

Directions?  We know the way.

Vacations are better outside.  Crisp clean air, chirping birds, babbling brooks, soft breezes and swaying grasses are the kind of healing you’d be hard pressed to find inside any hotel.  Getting out and camping in comfort once meant that you and your travel companions were in for a test of endurance and patience.  Packing, navigation, setup, cooking and cleanup were the subjects and you could either pass or fail.

While there’s never been an “’E’ for effort” in the great outdoors, there’s a new name for a cool sort of camping experience:  glamping.

Glamping, or, luxury camping, is everything you’ve always wanted your Nat Geo wannabe vacations to look like.  Glamping is the easy way out.  Toss some personal items and a wardrobe for an adventure into your suitcase and let the vacation begin.  A real bed, a proper washroom and tasty foods without a stick or a can will be at your fingertips.

Share s’more about yourself if we’ve got your interest.

Behind the scenes: Glamping

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Setting up cushy tents, topping off sultry soaking tubs and dishing up gourmet delights smack in the splendor of the great outdoors is tricky business.

Location, Location, Location

While X marks the spot might work for buried treasure, it won’t work out so well for your glamping business.  Site selection is, of course critical to your success and your guests’ experience.  Be prepared to confront use restrictions, building code confusion, scenic river restrictions, protected habitat laws, private interest push-back and more.

The good news:  Going green and holding true to a strict stewardship model greatly improves your chances for acceptance by regulators and neighbors.

It’s not rocket science

Some of the best glamping sites in the most beautiful locations across the country and world have proved to be engineering nightmares.  A great spot usually means that public utilities are non-existent and simple tasks like acquiring reliable drinking water might prove challenging.  You’ll need to carefully consider your energy requirements prior to sinking that ceremonial shovel into the ground.

The good news:   You need not feel obligated to enlist traditional methods in creating your venue.  After all, there is more than one way to setup camp and limit energy consumption.

Shipping not included

Just like any good camp spot; if it was easy to find, everybody’d be there.  Go ahead and look off the beaten path when scouring the countryside for a site.  Just be sure that you won’t disrupt the ecosystems who claimed it before you did and that guests and supplies can get there fairly simply.

The good news:  Glamping is an adventure whether you’re a guest or an operator.  Sure beats a cubicle!

Never go alone

We’ve written about our buddy system before and hold fast to it.  There’s no substitute for synergy so give us a call.
